QuickBooks is an excellent tool to have, especially if you file your own taxes, have extensive business accounts to manage or simply want to organize your home finances more carefully. As with most software, QuickBooks periodically comes out with new editions of their software. You can easily upgrade the 5.0 version (and other versions) by visiting the website and downloading it from there. By completing the process online, you'll save yourself both time and money. As of January 2010, the cost to upgrade a single-user license was $179.95.

Open the web browser on your computer. It doesn't matter what web browser you use--FireFox, Safari, Opera and Internet Explorer are all okay.

Visit the QuickBooks website, located at http://quickbooks.intuit.com. You must visit this website in order to upgrade your 5.0 version to the newest version available.

Locate the section titled "Looking to Upgrade?" on the right side of the home page. Once you find it, click on the link that says "Upgrade Now and Save."

Select the latest version of QuickBooks. There may be other versions available, as well. Once you've made your selection, click on "Upgrade Now" to begin the download.

Open the file when the download is complete and follow the installation instructions. This should take you anywhere from 3 to 15 minutes depending on the speed of your Internet connection.
