How to Get a NICET 2 Certification


The mission of the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies is fostering engineering quality through training and certification services. Technicians working as a team under the direction of engineers and other supervisors obtain NICET certification to prove their skills and experience. Getting a level two NICET certification requires testing, exams, certification fees and meeting prerequisites for training and experience.

Levels of Certification

  • National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies certifications consist of four tiers, each signifying a higher level of experience and knowledge. Before achieving NICET 2 status, you must qualify at the first tier, requiring entry-level training and a small amount of relevant experience. The second level of certification requires a minimum of two years of relevant experience in your field. The first level of certification proves basic competency, while the second level signifies advanced knowledge and greater investment in your career.

Fields of Certification

  • The two main branches of National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies certification focus on electrical and mechanical systems engineering technology and civil engineering technology. Civil engineering technology has 18 subfields, grouped by transportation, geotechnical, construction materials testing, land management and water control, building construction and underground utilities construction. For electrical and mechanical system engineering technology, the five main groups are electrical power, security systems, industrial instrumentation, fire protection and low voltage communication systems. These five groups offer a total of nine certification subfields.

Cost of Certification

  • The price of obtaining a level two National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies certification depends on the type of program. Most NICET 2 certification upgrade tests cost $255. The program that certifies for water-based systems has inspection, testing and work practices tests, each costing $156. The fee for the video security systems designer test is $310. Express evaluation for certification costs an extra $225. Recertification carries a fee of $175 for the first subfield while each additional subfield costs $50.

Testing and Recertification

  • Once you complete the prerequisites for NICET 2 certification in your field, you must register for testing. The testing center administers exams on computer or via a pencil and paper format, according to your field of certification. The supervisor who oversees the process checks your credentials and verifies your skills. Every three years, you must renew your certification with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies. Obtaining recertification involves participating in continued professional development that maintains your skills and keeps you informed of new developments in your field.
