How to Determine the Sex of White Geese

White geese are birds that live in the Bering Strait and in the Arctic region of North America, although you may see them in warmer regions during the winter months. The markings of white geese are rather distinguished, as they are all white with black tips on their wings and have red bills, legs and feet. If you are researching or breeding white geese, it is important to know how to properly determine their sex. If you are used to handling birds, you will have no problem determining the sex of white geese.

Instructions

    • 1

Grab a white goose firmly by the neck with one hand. Pick it up and place your other hand under its body for support. Place the goose on a table on its back with its head between your legs.

    • 2

Identify the vent or reproductive organ of the white goose. It will be near the bird's tail and positioned away from you. If you pull the bird's tail gently off the table, you will see the vent--a slit in the bird's body.

    • 3

Put a rubber glove on your dominant hand and rub some petroleum jelly on your gloved index finger.

    • 4

Place some pressure on the sides of the vent, and it will open. Slide your index finger into the vent about one-half inch.

    • 5

Spin your finger around inside the vent, and you will notice the pressure in the organ loosening.

    • 6

Watch for a corkscrew-shaped penis to emerge about two inches from the vent. If this happens, the white goose is male.

    • 7

Look for a small set of genitals on the female white goose. If a penis does not emerge 2 inches or more, you know that the genitals you see belong to a female white goose.
