How to Use Picture Cards in Reading
Learning to read can be difficult, but you can make it easier on your students by understanding how to best teach it. Helping the kids to learn the 220 most common words, or Dolch words, is an ideal way to ensure that they have a jump start on reading success. Picture cards are one popular way to teach these words because they feature the word and a picture demonstrating the word so that students learn to recognize the spelled-out word and associate it with the picture. Using these cards effectively can enhance student performance and cut down on stress associated with learning to read.

1
Ask the children to sit on the floor around your feet so that they can see the flashcards as you are using them.
-
2
Show the kids a flashcard and ask them to name the picture and word displayed on the card. Repeat this daily until their responses become automatic.

-
3
Give each child their own flashcards to practice with at home and during free time in class. At the end of each week, briefly quiz each individual child on her flashcards until all of the children are comfortable with the flashcards.
-
4
Ask the children to begin practicing writing the words on their flashcards. Once they are comfortable with this, begin giving them flashcards with pictures on them but no words. They can add the words themselves.
-
5
Assign short books featuring the words learned on the flashcards, giving each child the opportunity to read aloud, demonstrating his knowledge of the words learned.
