How to Set Up the Monitor Side-By-Side Application in Windows

One feature of Microsoft Windows is the ability to set up two computer monitors as a single, extended monitor. With this increase in desktop space, juggling work, movies, games or Internet browsers is far easier, increasing productivity and giving you loads of extra elbow room in the process. Whether connecting two monitors, a laptop and a monitor, or an HDTV to your desktop, the process is always the same and incredibly simple to do.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure your PC or laptop is connected to each monitor and that each monitor is on the proper input channel. The input channel varies depending on how you've connected your PC or laptop to the monitor (e.g. VGA, S-Video or DVI).

    • 2

Click the "Start" button on the taskbar and open the "Control Panel."

    • 3

Click "Appearance and Personalization" and click the option "Adjust Screen Resolution." In older versions of Windows (e.g. Windows XP), click "Display," and choose the "Settings" tab on the menu that pops up.

    • 4

Choose the option "Extend these displays" from the drop-down list next to Multiple displays. In older versions of Windows (such as XP), this list is under "Display." Simply select the second monitor, and check the box next to "Extend my Windows Desktop onto this monitor."

    • 5

Click "Apply," confirm the changes, and click "OK." On older versions of Windows, click "Identify" instead of "Apply," as there is no Apply button.

    • 6

Move onto the second monitor by moving your cursor off the far right or left side of the screen, depending on your setup and which monitor you are currently using.
