How to Replace the Light Switch in a Mobile Home

Replacing a light switch in a mobile home is the same as replacing a light switch in a traditional home. Both types of homes use the same type of switch, so it is not necessary to look for a switch made specifically for a mobile home. A faulty light switch is easy to replace on your own, without having to call in a professional. It is also a very inexpensive project.

Things You'll Need

  • Light switch
  • Screwdriver
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Turn off the breaker that supplies power to the light switch. This is done from the main breaker box outside the home.

  • Remove the screws on the front of the light switch plate. Remove the cover and set it aside.

  • Take out the screws that are holding the switch inside the light switch box. Pull the switch a few inches away from the box.

  • Use small pieces of tape to label the wires. This will help you remember how to properly connect each wire to its respective screw.

  • Loosen the screws with a screwdriver. Use needle nose pliers to pull the wires away from the screws.

  • Loosen the screws on the back of the new light switch and place the appropriate wires under them. Tighten the screws down onto the wires.

  • Place the switch back inside the box and place the two screws in place and tighten them. Replace the switch plate and attach with screws.

  • Turn the power to the switch back on an test it to make sure it is working.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the switch is still not working after it has been replaced, you should consult an electrician.
  • Be sure to let anyone else at home know that the breaker is off, and is not to be turned back on until you are done.
