How to Open the Optiplex Tower

When you want to replace any internal components or upgrade the hardware inside of your Dell Optiplex, the first step is to remove the cover from your computer. Dell desktops provide a release system for the cover which centers around two locking buttons that hold the removable side in place. With a few precautions for static discharge and protection of your peripheral devices, you can have the case removed from your Dell desktop in minutes.

  • Shut down your Dell Optiplex desktop and turn the power off to the tower. Turn the power off to any peripheral devices you may have connected to your computer, such as a monitor or printer.

  • Touch an unpainted metal surface either in your work area or on the back of your computer. The exposed metal on the outer face of the card slots on the back of your computer work well for this. This releases any built up static electricity in your body. You should do this once or twice while working on the computer as well, in case any static builds up.

  • Unplug your computer and any peripherals from the wall outlet or power source. Press the computer's power button again to ensure that the system board is grounded.

  • Lay the tower down sideways so that the front of the tower is facing away from you. Locate and press the two release buttons on either side of the tower, near the back. Lift the case while holding the release buttons.

  • Lift the cover from the back, and lift it towards the front of the tower to remove it.
