How to Know if a Diamond Is Real

If you're wondering whether a diamond is real or too good to be true, the best way to be sure is to have it appraised by a certified gemologist. When a professional consultation isn't an option because of time or money, there are some simple ways to check the gemstone for obvious signs that it's fake. Keep in mind, though, that some high-quality fakes may pass some of these tests.

Instructions

1. Place the diamond over printed paper. If you can see the print through the stone, it is probably not a diamond. Some diamonds are cut in such a way that the printing would be legible, so this test isn't foolproof.

2. Breathe on the diamond. Fake stones usually remain hazy for a few seconds while real diamonds will have no moisture on them. If the diamond is dirty, though, it may appear hazy even though it is real.

3. Shine a light through the stone. If light does not shine through the stone but refracts around it, there's a good chance it's real.

4. Examine the stone for inclusions and other flaws. Only the most valuable diamonds appear perfect, though you may need to use a jewelers loupe to find the flaws.

5. Check the facets of the stone. A real diamond is cut sharply and won't have rounded edges.
