The first step in potty training a puppy is get some newspapers or puppy training pad (You can buy those at any pet store and some Department Stores). Lay out the Newspaper or puppy training pads in a spot that should be easily accessible to your puppy at all times. The best place would be a tile or hardwood floor.

Besides taking the puppy outside every hour he will need to adjust to going on the Newspaper or puppy training pads. The puppy will have accidents in the house so the newspaper is a preliminary precaution. If you notice the puppy sniffing around or catch him in the act, tell the puppy "no" and pick up the puppy and take the puppy to the newspaper so they can relieve themselves, or finish up the process. This will let your puppy now that that is where to go in the house, just in case. It may take your dog 1-4 weeks to pick up on the newspaper training, so be patient.

Once the puppy is trained effectively on going potty on the newspaper the next step will be to make a transition to only going outside to use the potty. When you see the puppy going on the newspaper or catch him before he is about to go potty, you will need to tell him "no" and take him outside to their normal spot. It's very important to pay attention to their behavior. If the puppy is sniffing around, then most likely the puppy is about to go and it's looking for the prime spot to handle the business. It usually takes about 4-8 weeks for a puppy to be fully trained, but it can take longer.
