How to Become a Military Lawyer

The military uses lawyers in a wide range of capacities. From advising commanders on what the rules of engagement of a situation are to acting as counsel to military personnel charged with a crime, military lawyers have a wide range of responsibilities. Just like lawyers in any other field, these professionals have to go through a lengthy education and training period before they can become attorneys in military service.

      Get an undergraduate degree. Like all other attorney, military lawyers must meet the education requirements to get into an accredited law school. The first of these is obtaining at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

      Take the LSAT. Those wishing to go to law school must take the Law School Admissions Test. A half-day exam, it tests applicants on their reading comprehension and reasoning abilities, skills considered vital for the study of law.

      Go to law school. Once you've taken the LSAT and successfully enrolled in an accredited law school. These are usually three-year programs, though some night and part-time programs take longer. Once you complete law school you will have a Juris Doctor degree.

      Apply to the JAG Corps. The Judge Advocate General (JAG) is the part of the military that oversees legal matters. All branches of the military have JAG lawyers, so you can apply to the Air Force, Army of Navy JAG Corps. Marine JAG lawyers are part of the Navy JAG Corps.

      Get sworn in as a military lawyer. Once you're accepted into the JAG Corps, you'll have to serve a four-year tour. After that, you can opt to stay in the JAG Corps or work outside of the military.
