How to Make a Gaelic Coffee

A Gaelic coffee is a simple, easy-to-make drink with origins that can be traced back to 18th-century Irish pubs. Perfect for the cold, rainy weather of Ireland in the winter, this warming concoction makes a wonderful after-dinner drink. For a truly decadent dessert, serve Gaelic coffees with rich chocolate cake, fresh raspberries and warm dark chocolate sauce. This recipe makes two Gaelic coffees, though it is easily doubled or tripled for more people. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Divide the whiskey between two cocktail glasses and add half of the brown sugar to each glass.

    • 2

Pour the hot coffee into the glasses and stir with a spoon or glass stirrer to combine.

    • 3

Pour the heavy cream very slowly over the back of a spoon into the cocktail glasses. Let the glasses rest for 4 to 5 minutes before serving so that the cream can float to the surface and settle at the top.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is advisable to use a coffee press for this recipe, as the oils from the coffee beans greatly enhance the flavor of the drink. Paper coffee filters remove these oils from the final product.

  • For a truly unique drink, add ¼ cup warm Guinness beer to each glass in the first step.

  • To add even more kick, you can use freshly brewed espresso instead of regular coffee.
