How To Get Your Key Unstuck From the Ignition

If your key gets stuck in the ignition, it can be difficult to remove. Normally, this means that the pins inside the ignition tumbler have seized, and the ignition assembly needs to be destroyed in order to get your key unstuck. This is a job that you may want or need a professional to help you with. Before destroying the ignition, you can try to lubricate the keyhole to get your key unstuck.

Instructions

    • 1

Check to make sure that the car is in "park."

    • 2

Try to rotate the steering wheel back and forth just enough to allow the ignition key to be turned to the "off" position so that it can be removed.

    • 3

Spray a small amount of WD-40 lubricant into the keyhole behind the key.

    • 4

Try to work the key back and forth to move it to the "off" position in your vehicle. The pins inside the ignition lock may have become jammed. Lubricating them may allow you to turn the lock to the "off" position to allow you to remove the key.

    • 5

Wipe down the ignition lock and clean off the key once you get it removed from the ignition lock. If you are not able to remove it by lubricating the ignition lock, then you will need to have the lock professionally drilled and removed.
