McAfee Virus Scan is a popular product for combating viruses and malware, but it can be inconvenient for users. McAfee's On-Access Scan feature allows the program to scan for viruses, spyware, and other malicious software as soon as the hard drive is accessed. This means that you can catch malware before it becomes a problem. However, it also means that older or lighter weight systems can be seriously taxed. On-Access Scan uses a lot of system resources and can slow your computer, unless you disable it.
Things You'll Need
- McAfee Virus Scan
Access the Virus Scan Console. In Windows, this can be found in the “Start” menu, under “McAfee.” You can also access it through the VShield system tray icon by right-clicking. Double click “Access Protection.” This feature controls what access is permitted by McAfee, and allows you to decide when scans happen.
Locate “Prevent McAfee Services from being stopped.” This checkbox is automatically selected for many users. Click the box to deselect it. Click “Apply” and “OK” to finalize the change and exit the console.
Find the McAfee Virus Scan icon in your system tray. Right click this icon and select “Disable On-Access Scan.” This prevents McAfee from scanning your computer whenever it's accessed.
