How to Select Cookware for Ceramic Glass Cooktops

Ceramic glass cooktop stoves are favored by many for their ease of use and quick cleanup. Dealing with the worry of possible gas leaks or burners that won't light is no longer an issue with these modern cooktops. Caring for a ceramic glass cooktop is a bit different than caring for a traditional gas or electric range. For best results with your ceramic glass cooktop you should have cookware that meets certain criteria. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Look for flat-bottomed cookware. Cookware with rounded sides may cause uneven heating and undesirable cooking results. The bottom of the pan needs to touch the entire cooking surface. Most of today's brands have a flat bottom.

Choose medium to heavy cookware. The Cookware Manufacturers Association (CMA) recommends heavy aluminum or stainless brands such as Calphalon, All-Clad, Cuisinart, or Renaissance by Regal. Some newer cast-iron cookware may be used if it does not have the raised ring on the bottom.

Make sure your chosen cookware is the proper size. Cookware that extends no more than ½ inch outside the cooking surface is ideal.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the bottom of cookware is clean and dry before use to prevent possible transfer of residue or deposits that may occur when heated.

  • Always use a non-abrasive cleaner and pad approved specifically for cleaning ceramic glass cooktops. Other cleaners may scratch the surface.

  • Avoid cookware with painted surfaces or ribbed bottoms. Painted surfaces can transfer the color of the cookware to your cooktop when heated. The CMA also recommends avoiding store brands as they are usually cheaply made and may warp under heat.

  • Do not slide cookware of any kind across a glass cooktop as it may scratch the surface of your cooktop.

  • Be careful not to drop heavy cookware on the cooktop as it may cause the surface to break or crack. Also avoid storing jars, cans or any other hard object above the stove that could cause damage if it fell.

  • Always clean up food spills containing sugar or acids as soon as possible. These can cause staining or pitting on the surface of your cooktop.

  • Do not allow cookware to boil dry if using copper as it will leave a residue that may permanently stain your cooktop.
