How to Weave Mini Baskets
Creating your own furniture and decorations for small scenery, such as in doll houses, can be a fun and challenging pastime. These crafts are usually done with a scale of 1:12 or 1:24 compared to life-size, so the task may require a good deal of dexterity. Weaving miniature baskets for this purpose requires many of the same principles as regular basket-weaving, although different materials are used.
Things You'll Need
- Cake wire
- Craft glue
- Crazy glue
- Scissors
- Embroidery thread
- Tweezers
- Ruler

1
Measure out and cut ten 2-inch pieces of cake wire. Separate the pieces into two equal groups and place them on your work surface, perpendicularly to each other, so that they intersect in the middle. One group of wires should be above the other.
-
2
Place a drop of crazy glue underneath the top group of wires in the center, so that it holds together with the bottom group of wires. Press the groups of wires together at the center and hold for a few seconds until the glue sticks.

3
Take about 3 feet of embroidery thread and fold it in half around one group of wires. Guide it so that the thread underneath the first set of wires goes above the second set of wires to the right. Likewise, guide the half of the thread that goes over the first set of wires so that it goes underneath the second set of wires to the right. Repeat this process until you have woven around each of the four groups of wires about four or five times.
-
4
Separate one of the groups of wires into three groups, with two of them consisting of two wires and the last consisting of one wire. Do this for the other groups of wires as well. Be sure that these groups are evenly spaced and branch out radially from the middle. Continue the same process of weaving described in Step 3 for four or five more rounds.
-
5
Divide the groups of wires further until you have equally spaced single wires in a radial shape. Continue the same method of weaving around these wires until the basket bottom is sufficient in diameter for your purposes.
-
6
Bend the wires upwards using your tweezers to create the sides of your basket. From this point, alter your method of weaving so that you weave the embroidery thread in the pattern of "two under, one over" instead of "under, over," as was done previously. Continue this until the height of your basket sides is to your liking.
-
7
Snip off the excess wire from the top of the basket. Create a braid using three strands of embroidery thread measured to fit around the circumference of the top of your basket. Place some craft glue at the ends of the exposed wire and around the top of the basket, then glue on the braid, making sure no wire is visible at the top. Allow the project to set for at least 15 minutes.

Tips & Warnings
Running the embroidery thread through beeswax or something with a similar consistency may make the weaving process easier.
