How to Get Certified in Parenting

Becoming certified in parenting usually means that you study to get a certificate in something related to "parenting and communication" or "parenting and education," which would be useful to anyone who works with kids, regardless if they have any of their own. Similarly, you can be certified to become an official parenting coach, someone who can teach and train other people what you've learned so that they can be certified.

Decide if you want to study online or in an actual classroom. There are lot of websites that offer online certificate programs where you can study parenting concepts at your own pace and on your own time. While there aren't a lot of institutes dedicated solely to parenting certification, contact local colleges near you to see if they offer a program or certification in parenting. They probably have some sort of equivalent.

Study your course materials comprehensively. If you're studying with an online certification program, usually all your course material is online. Sometimes there is homework to submit, though often it's just reading material. With in-class programs you have to read your materials comprehensively enough to adequately prepare for class discussions. In either case, if you ever have a question you must ask it immediately, either by emailing it or asking the professor.

    • 3

Consider studying supplementary materials such as classic texts on parenting.

    • 4

Prepare for the end of course exam, by reviewing your notes and all materials you studied. Make sure you can explain in your own words the major and minor subjects studied and be able to give examples for each concept. If you don't pass, most schools offer one complimentary retake of the exam.

Good ideas Lane. While there is a lot to be said for common-sense, intuition, and experience when it comes to parenting, some people may wish to pursue some sort of certification. As a certified professional parenting coach myself, working with parents, families, and youth, I agree with your points, especially about obtaining proper certification through an accredited provider like The International Coach Academy (ICA), the school I used. Do your homework and beware people or providers who offer programs that have not been accredited through governing bodies like Tthe International Coach Federation (ICF), for example. Just one final thought about parent coaching ... parent coaches are not in the business of telling parents the right way to parent, but rather, helping parents discover and embrace the strategies that are right for their unique families.
