How to Build a 64 Bit PC
Computers have evolved a long way from the first personal computers. The first mass-produced computers were based on 8-bit processors. This quickly evolved to 16-bit and later 32-bit processors. Computers based on 64-bit processors offer more addressable memory, hard drive space and stacks. Like previous computers based on lessor "bit" technologies, you can only take advantage of these additional things if your operating system and software is 64-bit as well.
Things You'll Need
- CPU
- Motherboard
- Screwdriver
- Computer case
- Power supply
- Heatsink
- RAM
- PCIe cards
- PCI cards
- SATA drives
- SATA cables
- 64-bit operating system
Instructions
-
-
1
Evaluate and obtain your computer components for your 64-bit computer. Determine your budget and select components based on your expected use for the computer. Make sure you select a 64-bit CPU and supporting motherboard.
-
2
Screw the power supply into the computer case. Work on a solid surface. The power supply is held in with four screws. Make sure to properly ground yourself.
-
-
3
Mount the motherboard into the case using the supplied stand-offs and mounting hardware.
-
4
Insert the CPU into the CPU socket on the motherboard. Be careful not to bend the pins on the CPU. After the CPU is flush, lock it in place with the locking level attached to the socket.
-
5
Attach the CPU heatsink and fan. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the application of thermal paste and clipping the heatsink into place.
-
6
Slide the RAM chips into their slots. There are clips on the ends of each memory slot that lock the RAM into place when they are fully seated.
-
7
Press any PCIe and PCI cards into their respective slots. Use the mounting brackets to secure them.
-
8
Install the SATA drives into the drive bays. Use the supplied mounting brackets and ensure the cable connections are facing toward the inside of the case.
-
9
Plug the SATA cables and case cables into the motherboard. Attach the other end of the SATA cables in to their respective drives.
-
10
Secure the power cables from the power supply to the motherboard, SATA drives, fans and PCIe devices.
-
11
Power up the computer and install a 64-bit operating system.
