Place the sham on your work surface. Smooth the sham flat.

Measure the width of the sham. Measure from the stitched edge of one side of the pillow sham opening, to the stitched edge of the other side of the sham opening.

Measure the height of the pillow sham. Measure from the stitched edge of the top of the pillow sham opening, to the stitched edge of the bottom of the sham opening.

Measure around the height of your pillow to determine sham size. The sham opening should be one half-inch larger in width and height for your pillow to fit inside the sham.

Determine how you want your sham to fit a pillow. If you want your sham to cover a firm, plump pillow, measure around the height of the pillow to determine if it is plump enough for your sham. If you prefer a sham with a looser fit, use a pillow that is flatter and smaller in height circumference.

Tips & Warnings
To use a pillow you have that is not quite big enough, wrap quilt batting around the pillow to create extra thickness. Encase the batting-wrapped pillow in a pillowcase and slip it inside your pillow sham.
