How to Vacuum Algae in an Above-Ground Pool

Although algae can be a valuable addition to fish ponds--where it acts as a food source and valuable part of the aquatic environment--algae in a swimming pool or a purely decorative pond is just a nuisance. An algae bloom can turn bright, clear water into a soupy green mess and keep people from taking a dip in the pool. There are just a couple of steps necessary to get rid of algae blooms. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Put your pool vacuum together. Connect the pole to the vacuum head, and the vacuum head to the hose. Use an extension pole, so your vacuum head can reach all the way to the bottom of the deepest end of your pool. The vacuum will be useful only for the algae that's growing on the sides and bottom of your pool, and must be able to reach all surface areas.

    • 2

Use the pole to push the vacuum head into the water. As you push head down, it drags the hose, which will fill with water. Once the hose is full of water, attach it to the suction line in your skimmer, or pump.

    • 3

Vacuum your pool as you would vacuum your rug. Run the vacuum head up and down on the bottom of the pool, in slightly overlapping strokes. Run the vacuum head along the sides of the pool in the same way.

    • 4

Clean floating algae out of your pool by increasing your pump and filtering action. Increase the rate of your pump and filter to intensify its cleaning activity.

    • 5

Add algae treatment chemicals and chlorine to the water in your pool, to further eliminate and discourage algae. Always follow manufacturer directions when using chemicals such as chlorine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Algae blooms in spring, and will be most obvious at that time.

  • Chemicals such as chlorine can be dangerous if ingested.

  • Using your vacuum before there is adequate water in the hose can damage the pump.
