How to Have Family Night Without Spending Money

If you're on a tight budget or you just want to find ways to have family night, you can create new memories without spending money. For example, if your children enjoy playing games, take out some board games you have, such as Scrabble and Monopoly, and play together for hours. Or you can have a backyard picnic with snacks such as buttered popcorn, barbecue chicken drummettes, ham-and-cheese sandwiches and lemonade or fruit punch. The most important thing is that you're spending quality time together as a family.

Instructions

  1. Find Resources You Have at Home

    • 1

Look through your DVD collection at home and take out the ones you want to watch. Be sure the movies you choose are kid-friendly but still interesting enough that the children will want to watch them.

    • 2

Take out your CDs and have a family dance contest. You and your spouse can compete against each other then let the kids compete against the both of you. If you have two or more children, let the older siblings compete with the younger ones.

    • 3

Use some of your frozen leftovers to make dinner. If you have a few bags of frozen barbecue sauce, you and the family can make barbecue mini meatballs, barbecue burgers or a barbecue beef brisket. If you have some frozen fruit, you can thaw it out then make a chocolate fondue to dip the fruit in.

    • 4

Make a family scrapbook. Include pictures of you and your spouse, you and your spouse's relatives, the children and family pets. Also, decorate the outside of the book with painted flowers or boats, colored fabric scraps and written quotes you often say around the house.

    • 5

Play sports in the backyard. For example, you can play basketball in your backyard where you and your spouse will compete against the children. You can also race each other or play dodgeball.

Tips & Warnings

  • Invite some of your extended family members, classmates or children in the neighborhood. This adds diversity to the occasion.
