Instructions

    • 1

If the headboard is taller than the footboard (as headboards usually are), use a saw to cut the legs of the headboard down so that the headboard and footboard are of equal height. Use a drill to create new holes in the headboard where it will be attached to the bed frame.

    • 2

Gently sand the headboard, footboard and bed rails (if they are wood) and dust off residue. Pay special attention to sanding down rough edges where the headboard was cut.

    • 3

Apply two coats of paint to each piece. Black or white paint are both good choices for a gender-neutral guest room. Use two coats of a primer before painting if the finished product will be a white or cream finish. Allow one to two hours for the paint to dry between coats and before handling. Reattach the headboard and footboard to the bed frame.

Choose simple colors and fabrics to dress the daybed. Purchase a comforter in a neutral, soothing color like cream, tan or blue. Select four coordinating king-sized pillow shams, a handful of square toss pillows and a bolster pillow.

    • 5

Position the bed in the guest room so that the length of the bed is against the wall. After putting on the comforter, place the king-sized pillows along the back of the bed to convert it into a comfortable couch. Toss the remaining pillows in front of the king pillows. Add a blanket or throw to the end of the day bed.

Keep the remainder of the guest room simple and clutter-free. Place a small nightstand next to the guest bed with a lamp and a couple of books. Use a dresser to hold guest towels and trial-sized toiletries. Place a television on the dresser or mounted on the wall above it.
