How to Hook Up a VCR to a Computer Monitor
Attaching your computer monitor to your VCR will provide you with a good alternative for watching movies and family films if your home television is broken. While the two items might seem incompatible, you can easily connect your VCR to your computer monitor by purchasing a simple intermediary device known as a VGA Box. This is a converter box that acts as a "translator" between the two items, allowing you to watch the VCR's output signal on your monitor.

Purchase a VGA box from a local electronics store or an online retailer (such as Amazon.com). Always purchase from an online retailer when you do not need the product immediately; this will almost always get you a better price.

Connect your VCR to the VGA box using a set of AVI cables (the cables with red, white and yellow connectors). These will plug directly into the back of the box.

Connect your monitor to the VGA box using a standard VGA monitor cable (the type of cable you use to connect your computer to your monitor). Like the AVI cables, these will also plug directly into the VGA box.

Follow the instructions that came with your specific VGA box for setting the input modes (usually accomplished by flipping a small switch on the side of the box). This will tell the box what signals to convert, displaying the image onscreen.
