How to Know If Your Computer Has Wireless Internet

Wireless Internet can be an incredible boom to your home network, but you can only utilize it if your individual computers are all set up with the proper hardware to receive a wireless signal. This requires the presence of a wireless network card, either installed within the machine or connected externally to the machine (typically through a USB port). Finding out whether or not your computer can access a wireless Internet connection is a fairly simple procedure that you can do in less than five minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the "Device Manager," which is a list containing all of the hardware that is connected to your machine. You can accomplish this by going to the "Start" menu, selecting "Control Panel," and then selecting "Device Manager."

    • 2

Click on "Network Adapters" in the full list of items on the main "Device Manager" screen. This displays a list of all of the network devices connected to your computer.

    • 3

Search the list for an entry that contains the word "wireless." For example, you may have a listing that reads "Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection." If something akin to this is present in the list, your computer has the capability for wireless Internet access.
