How to Attract Gold Finches
The goldfinch is a beautiful, bright yellow bird with black markings. Males are much brighter in color than females, but they all have a yellow/orange cone-shaped beak. They are common to much of North America, and they are the state bird for three states: Washington, New Jersey and Iowa. If you have bird feeders in place, chances are good that you will automatically attract a goldfinch; but if you want to increase the odds of attracting a flock repeatedly, you can take a few measures.
Things You'll Need
- Tubular bird feeder
- Niger seed
- Black oil sunflower seed
- Birdbath
- Coneflowers, dandelions, sunflowers and thistle flowers
Instructions

1
Purchase a long tubular feeder with several eating ports. Goldfinches usually travel in flocks, but don't like a lot of competition when it comes to trying to get to their food.
-
2
Fill the feeder with nyjer, thistle and/or black oil sunflower seed. You can also place some seed on flat feeders and on the ground.

-
3
Place a birdbath or a water source within 20 feet of the feeding area.
-
4
Put some of the goldfinches' favorite plants around your home. Goldfinches particularly like coneflowers, dandelions, sunflowers and thistles, as they produce the types of seeds that goldfinches like to eat.

Tips & Warnings
A heated birdbath is an especially welcome treat to goldfinches in the winter.
Discard unused food after two to three days to prevent mold and contamination, and keep the ground beneath the feeders raked to prevent the spread of disease among bird flocks.
