How to Set Up Standby Power in XP

Microsoft Windows XP is equipped with energy-saving options to use when you are not actively using your PC, but do not want to shut it down completely. Standby is an energy-conserving option that switches your computer to a low-power state. Hardware, such as your monitor and hard disks, will turn off causing your computer to use much less power. Standby is perfect for when you need a break, because it leaves your applications open on your desktop, and to return from standby, all you have to do is click the mouse or a key on the keyboard. Setting up your standby options only takes a few steps and will conserve energy when you need to walk away for a little while.

Instructions

    • 1

Close all windows currently open on your desktop. Click "Start," then "Control Panel."

    • 2

Double-click "Power Options" to bring up all power saving options and settings, including hibernation, system standby and Energy Star.

    • 3

Locate the "System Standby" option at the bottom of the Power Options box. Select the time frame of when you'd like your system to go into "Standby" mode. There are options for your system to go into standby mode from one minute to six hours.

Click "Apply" to make your changes take place, then click "OK" to save the new settings. Your system will now have standby power enabled.
