How to Fix an Xbox 360 X-plorer Strum Bar

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the exterior case or plastic covering on the X-plorer guitar. Use a small screwdriver to take out the screws holding on the case.

    • 2

Locate the strum bar, also known as the whammy bar, inside the guitar. Look for any signs of damage to the strum bar. Spray canned air directly into the inside of the guitar. Occasionally the whammy bar sticks because of debris built up around the area.

    • 3

Find the small spring, which lets you pull up or down on the strum bar and then moves the bar back to its original position. You need to replace this spring when the whammy bar doesn't move easily or becomes stuck. Take off the spring and replace it with another small spring.

    • 4

Identify the resistance switch behind the spring. The resistance switch is one of the most important parts of your Xbox 360 guitar because it transmits the movement of the strum bar to the sensor. Use the soldering iron to reattach any loose wires, which is a common problem with the controller.

    • 5

Replace the exterior case or plastic piece that you removed from the guitar controller earlier. Attach the screws and ensure that the screws are firmly in place. Once you clean the outside and solder back any loose wires, the guitar controller should work again.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may need to replace some of the wires inside the X-plorer guitar controller, especially if the wires were are frayed or damaged. All you need to do is remove the frayed wires and replace those, but remember exactly where the wires go because you don't want to accidentally forget to replace one.

  • If you have access to an older controller, even one from another system such as the PS2, it's possible to replace the strum bar. Pull out the old whammy bar while you have the inside open and then replace it with the other whammy bar.
