How to Make Knitted Baby Bibs
Hand-knitted baby gifts are a considerate present for a baby shower because they show that you cared enough to put the effort into making a gift by hand. You can customize bibs to the new baby, from color choices to materials and embellishments. If you can knit or purl, you can make a knitted baby bib in a simple pattern that even a beginning knitter can master.

1
Knit a rectangle using any stitch pattern you like. Make your rectangle approximately 8 inches wide by 10 inches long for a solid, full-sized bib. Use a close-knit stitch pattern, such as garter stitch or seed stitch, to keep your bib from letting too many leaks go through it. When you finish your rectangle, bind off and weave in your ends using a large eye blunt needle.

Cut two lengths of ribbon in a color that coordinates with your baby bib. Use grosgrain ribbon in 1/2-inch width and cut each length of ribbon to 12 inches. Paint both ends of each ribbon length using clear nail polish to prevent fraying.

Sew the lengths of ribbon on the top edges of the bib (along the 8-inch side, approximately 2 inches from the edge on each side). Position the ribbon so that one end of each is sewn down to the bib, with the main portion of the ribbon lengths hanging free. Tie the loose ends of the ribbon into a bow; this is how the new parents will attach the bib to baby's neck.

4
Embellish your bib by embroidering a design on it, if desired. Use embroidery floss and a needle to embroider baby's initial, a flower, or another small design onto the front of the bib. Sew a square of waterproof fabric to the back of the bib for extra absorbency and to cover the design. If you choose not to embroider your bib, the waterproof fabric is still a good idea.

Tips & Warnings
Instead of sewing ribbon, you can use a crochet hook to attach a length of yarn to the top of your bib and create a length of chain stitches for the tie. Fasten off and repeat on the other side of the bib.
