How to Crochet With Scraps of Fabric
If you can crochet, you don't have to limit yourself to only using yarn in your projects. You can crochet with string, hemp, fabric strips or even plastic bags. Some eco-friendly crochet projects involve repurposing old items and using them in your crochet. Use any old fabric or garment you have in your home and turn it into a new crocheted item.

1
Cut your fabric strips. The easiest way is to cut a tube-shaped garment into loops. For example, you could use an old T-shirt; cut 1-inch strips horizontally across the body of the shirt, then cut 1-inch strips off each sleeve. Now you have a series of fabric loops.

2
Lay out two loops so that their ends slightly overlap. Bring the bottom loop up through the top one and fold it in half, pulling it through its own loop again to secure the two loops together. Repeat this step for every remaining loop, making a chain out of them. Roll this chain into a ball.

Cut any regular, flat fabric into 1-inch strips and tie the strips together by knotting the ends. Wind these strips into a ball.

4
Use a large crochet hook (size J or higher) and crochet with the looped fabric or strips the way you would crochet with yarn. Just be aware that it will be a little more difficult to do because you will have to get both sides of each loop into your hook every time, and the resulting garment will be somewhat bumpy because of the knots in the strips or the connections between the loops. For this reason, it is better to make accessories out of this type of crochet rather than garments.
