How to Make a Wig for a Child's School Project

If you find yourself in charge of making the costume for your child's theater project, basic wig-making knowledge can be helpful. You can make a simple wig using yarn for hair if the character requires exaggeratedly long locks or a different hair color than that of your child. After these wigs have made their debut in your child's class project, they can be reused as a fun accessory for a Halloween costume. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Mesh produce bag with large holes (such as an onion bag)
  • Scissors
  • One skein of yarn
  • Bobby pins

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a mesh produce bag into a circle large enough to cover the top of the child's head. Cut a string of yarn twice as long as your desired final hair length. Fold the string in half.

    • 2

Insert the looped end of string into a hole at the center of the mesh circle, starting above the mesh and threading down through the hole so it sticks out approximately 1 inch. Bring the looped end back up through a hole next to the first hole so the loop sticks 1 inch out of the mesh. Insert the tail ends of the string through the loop and pull until tight. Repeat, adding strings of yarn to make two vertical lines of attached yarn in the center of the mesh. Add more strings to the left and right of the first lines to create more body to the yarn hair.

    • 3

Cut yarn hair to desired length.

    • 4

Secure the yarn wig atop the child's head using bobby pins.

Tips & Warnings

  • You need not loop yarn through every hole in the mesh for a simple wig. When creating the first two rows of hair or adding additional layers, you can skip some holes and still create textured yarn hair.
