How to Reduce the Start Up Time in Windows XP

When you've used Windows XP for a while, downloading and installing programs and updating the system, you might notice that your computer takes longer to start up than it used to. Programs often are added without your knowledge to the list of start-up applications. You can remove some programs from the list to speed up your system by using the "System Configuration Utility."

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the "Start" button to open the Start Menu and then click on "Run..." If this option isn't on the Start Menu in your version of Windows, enter "Run" in the "Start Search" and click on the program when it appears on the list.

    • 2

Enter "MSConfig" in the space and click "OK" or press the "Enter" key to open the System Configuration Utility.

    • 3

Select the "Startup" tab to display a list of programs and services that run at system start-up.

    • 4

Uncheck the programs that don't necessarily need to run at start-up. If you're unsure about a program, research it on the Internet before disabling it. Generally, software that controls imaging for the display, anti-virus programs, networking applications, Java and update software need to run at start-up. Be careful, however, because different computers will have different needs.

    • 5

Click on "Apply" and "OK" to confirm the changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you disable programs without knowing what they are, you might stop something that is required for your system to run, which can be tricky to fix.
