1
Pry up the anti-slip nosing on each step. Many are held down with glue; however, some may be attached with nails or staples. If you see nails or staples along the edges, you must remove those prior to attempting to pry up the carpet.
-
2
Lift the bottom edge of the industrial carpet starting at the bottom stair. Pull it up enough so you can grasp it. You may have to use a slight side to side motion to pull the carpet up if it is attached using carpet tack strips.

3
Continue pulling up the carpet on each ascending step. If you get to a spot where it won't pull up, you may have to pry up the edge using a crow bar.
-
4
Roll up the carpet as you go to make it easier to work with. If it gets too bulky to hold, cut it using a utility knife. Secure it with twine to make it easy to dispose of it.
-
5
Remove the carpet padding if applicable. You can do this by pulling up the strip that is on top of each stair.
-
6
Pull up the carpet tack strips once you have removed all of the carpet from the stairs.

Tips & Warnings
If the carpet is glued down to the stairs, you can loosen the adhesive using a hair dryer. Take care not to let the carpet get too hot, as it may burn the carpet. As you loosen the adhesive in one section, pull that section of the carpet up before the adhesive cools down.
Wear gloves, safety goggles and a respirator when you remove the industrial carpeting, especially if you have allergies or asthma.
