How to Wrap a Hiking Stick

You enjoy hiking and you'd like to use a hiking stick, but you'd like to wrap the grip so that your hand has something to hold onto besides the bare wood. Once you pick out your hiking stick and cut and whittle it to its appropriate shape, you'll need to fashion an area where your grip will go.

You may either use leather or paracord to wrap your grip.

Things You'll Need

  • Hiking stick
  • 15 feet of paracord or leather cord
  • Grip tape
  • Scissors or knife
  • Matches
  • Superglue (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Tape the cord to the bottom of the grip. Leave about a foot of cord extending past the top of the hiking staff to be a and tape the cord to the lowest part of the grip. This 12 inches will become part of the lanyard. Wrap the tape around the bottom two or three times to keep the cord in position.

    • 2

Wrap the grip surface with tape so when you wrap the cord around the grip, there will be enough friction to hold it. You may wrap it over the lanyard piece so the lanyard will remain in place when you wrap the grip.

    • 3

Start at the bottom of the grip and wrap the cord around the staff in a counter-clockwise fashion with the long, unraveled cord. Wrap it over the lanyard cord, keeping that taut.

    • 4

When you get to the end, wrap both the lanyard and the wrapping cord around the handle and tie off.

    • 5

Measure the length of the lanyard and cut any excess from the wrapping cord and cut to the same length. Tie a knot at the end.

    • 6

If you're using paracord, use a match to carefully melt the ends of the cut cord so that they're neat.

Tips & Warnings

  • Adding a dab of glue will help keep your wrapped grip more firmly in place. Add a dab of glue on the knots.

  • Always be careful when using matches to melt the paracord. Do not light the paracord on fire or burn yourself.

  • When using Superglue, be sure to have Superglue remover handy and wait until the glue is completely dried before touching.
