How to Find a Good Transmission Shop

Finding a good transmission shop is a task not to be taken lightly. Going through the yellow pages of the telephone directory might be fine if you want to order a pizza, but if you are attending to something as critical as your car's transmission, a little more research is in order. Luckily, there are consumer organizations that keep track of good and bad service professionals, which should make your research easier and give you peace of mind when dropping your car off at the transmission shop.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask friends, coworkers, neighbors and family members if they know of a good transmission shop. You can also ask your regular mechanic who he or she recommends. Personal referrals are sometimes the best way of finding good tradespeople.

    • 2

Check with your local Better Business Bureau for complaints about the transmission shop.

    • 3

Seek information about the facility from your state's Bureau of Automotive Repair. Not all states have such a consumer protection office, but if yours does, take advantage of the service.

    • 4

Ascertain if the technician is certified by The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). The ASE, a non-profit organization, tests and certifies mechanics. They do not certify businesses, only individuals, so you will need to make sure that whomever will be working on your car is ASE-Certified. You can find this out by looking for a sticker or sign in the shop, or by asking the owner. If the shop is ASE Blue Shield Certified, that means that 75 percent of the shop's technicians hold ASE certificates.
