How to Play the Drums to Gospel Music Beats

Gospel music is a lyrical melting pot that uses bits and pieces from different musical genres to uplift our spirits. The powerful, driving music makes the genre ideal for drummers. A gospel drummer needs to be sharp on rhythm and timing and knowledgeable about many musical styles. The high energy of gospel can be a challenge, especially for drummers, whose musical foundation often supports an entire church congregation of singers in addition to a choir and the rest of the band. Playing gospel drums can be an uplifting career for any drummer willing to put in the practice.

Study and practice all styles of drumming techniques. Gospel music is a mix of various musical genres that include blues, rock, folk and country. Gospel drummers tend to be some of the most versatile drummers in music because of the variations they are often required to play.

Play dynamically, which means playing with a big, heavy sound and hitting all your beats on cue. Drums play a major role in gospel music, which relies heavily on rhythm. You'll be getting into rhythmic groove with the bass player and piano player. Spend time practicing with these musicians whenever possible to hone your timing.

Study often, even when you have been playing for quite some time. There are always new ways to play, new techniques to learn and styles you can add to your repertoire. The more you watch other drummers, both gospel and in other music genres, the more you will be able to bring with you when you sit down behind your drums to back up the choir.
