How to Mount a Chimney Cap

There are two different types of chimney caps that can be mounted on a chimney an outside mounted cap and an inside mounted cap. Both models have an easy process to mount them in there position on the chimney. A chimney cap keeps the burning tinder from flying out of the chimney and starting a fire on or around your home. This is not a difficult project to complete the correct way and you will have this job finished in about thirty minutes. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Power drill
  • Drill bit set
  • Silicone sealer
  • Putty knife
  • Broom

Instructions

  1. Mounting an Exterior Chimney Cap

    • 1

      Place the chimney cap over the top of the chimney. Using the power drill and drill bit set, drill starter holes into the chimney through the support holes on the chimney cap's support frame.

      Place silicon sealant onto the entire under side of the chimney cap support frame that will be connected to the chimney. Place the chimney cap onto the chimney. Make sure that the holes on the chimney cap's support frame are lined up with the starter holes that you made.

      Insert the concrete screws into the chimney cap's support frame connecting the chimney cap to the chimney with the power drill. Use the putty knife to scrap away any extra silicon sealant that might be visible.

    Mounting an Interior Chimney Cap

      Clean out as much debris that you can from the walls of the chimney shaft. use a your hands or a broom to do this.

      Push the new interior chimney cap into the chimney shaft. It should be a tight fit and the edges of the new chimney cap should be flush with the walls of the chimney shaft.

      Apply silicon sealant to the perimeter of the chimney cap connecting the cap to the wall of the chimney shaft and let the silicon sealant dry for twenty four hours.
