How to Make a Figure 4 Squirrel Trap
Capturing animals for food is sometimes necessary in survival situations, and small animals are easier to process. A figure-4 squirrel trap is often referred to as a deadfall trap. It is a trigger that will drop a weight on a squirrel or other small animal and crush it. The figure-4 trap is very effective, provided that it is constructed properly.

1
Place all three of your sticks on the ground so they form a figure four--a plus-sign with two sticks and one that lays diagonally, forming the number 4. The upright stick should be dovetailed at one end and squared off to a right-angled edge about halfway down. The diagonal stick should be bevelled at the top and dovetailed at the bottom, so that it fits snugly into the notch at the end of the bait stick. And the bait stick in the center should fit cleanly against the squared-off edge of the upright stick.

2
Skewer the bait with the pointed bait stick, setting up the trap. Carefully place the very edge of your rock or log (to be used as a deadfall) on the diagonal. Make sure the rock or log you use weighs at least five times as much as the animal you are trying to trap.

To prevent the animal from entering in the wrong direction, place sticks or brush on one side of the trap.
