How to Archive With Pidgin Instant Messenger

Pidgin is an instant messaging platform, formerly known as Gaim, that allows users to chat with others in a direct relay manner. Using Pidgin, you can connect to AIM, MSN messenger, Facebook chat, Skype, Yahoo messenger, and numerous other chat programs, all conveniently from one location. This saves you from having to run multiple IM programs at once. When chatting, you may wish to have your conversations saved in order to reference them later on, or just because you like having that kind of record. Conversation archiving with Pidgin is simple.

Run your Pidgin client. To do so, open your Start menu and click All Programs, then find the Pidgin folder and click the icon within. If you have a desktop or sidebar icon for Pidgin, click the icon to allow Pidgin to load.

Double-click your taskbar icon in order to open your buddy list. If double-clicking doesn't work, right-click on the icon, then select Show Buddy List from the menu that pops up.

Click the Tools menu at the top of your buddy list, then select Preferences. In the preferences window, click the tab that reads Logging. Here, you have the option of saving chat logs as HTML or plain text. To enable logging, check "Log all instant messages." For archiving chat room conversations, also check "Log all chats." If you want to save your status changes, select "Log all status changes to system log." Once done, click OK.

Access your conversation logs by directing your computer to your Pidgin logs folder. This folder is most often located at C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data for users on Windows XP or below. On Windows Vista, this folder is located at C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\.

    Tips & Warnings

    • If you need more control over your conversation archives, download a plug-in for Pidgin that lets you change more settings. Some plug-ins allow you to archive all your conversations by saving them online, such as IM-History. You can also back up your conversation archives with a plug-in such as Pidgin Backup, so that you have a file of your conversations outside of Pidgin.
