How to Fix a Sewing Machine Belt

All sewing machines require a drive belt for the motor to turn the working parts. Usually this belt is made of rubber, which can dry out from age or weaken from use, and it may need replacement. With a screwdriver and a little mechanical savvy, you can accomplish this yourself so you won't have to take your machine into a repair shop for costly servicing.

• Screwdriver

Instructions

1. Remove the top and handwheel covers of the sewing machine with a screwdriver. Set the pieces aside in order, to keep track of them and to make it easier to return them to their places.

2. Check the tension on the belt to see if tightening will solve your problem. If not, then remove the belt by loosening the mounting bolts.

3. Slip the new belt onto the mounts and tighten the mounting bolts. Push on the side of the belt to check the tension. It should be rigid, but not stretched.

Tips & Warnings

• Use the appropriate size screwdrivers for the fastenings on your machine. Otherwise you may damage the screw heads enough to make them unusable.

• Consult any documentation that came with your machine, if you still have it.

• While you've got the top and handwheel covers open, use the opportunity to clean and lubricate your machine. Remove any dust or gunk that may have collected inside. One drop of machine oil on each of the moving parts will do, and be careful not to get oil on any electrical parts.

• Always unplug your machine before opening the covers to access its internal works.

• Make certain you have the correct drive belt for your machine. Consult the manufacturer.
