How to Make a Bracket on Microsoft Excel

Tournament brackets are a popular use for spreadsheeta. Microsoft Excel is well-suited to the layout of many teams and the outcomes of their games. The relationship between columns and rows makes any spreadsheet an ideal choice for formatting this popular document type. Brackets can range from professional sports to college leagues. NCAA men's basketball tournament brackets are especially popular as many competitions among offices and other social circles aim to predict the outcomes of these games. Soccer and NBA tournaments appear frequently in brackets as well. Microsoft has made it easy to create a bracket in Excel so anyone can keep track of a tournament.

Things You'll Need

  • Microsoft Excel
  • Web browser with Internet connection
  • Visit Microsoft's web site and navigate to their templates library for Microsoft Office.

  • Type the words "tournament bracket" in the search box at the top of the templates library. Press the "Search" button to initiate a scan of the entire online Microsoft templates library for all tournament bracket documents available.

  • Filter the search results for Microsoft Excel. This is easily accomplished by choosing the "Excel" item in the drop-down list on the left under "Filter By Product."

  • View the results. Determine the style of bracket you wish to make in Excel and find the best option. Brackets for all major sports which utilize these documents are available.

  • Click on the bracket you wish to download. This will take you to a page dedicated to that bracket.

  • Click the download button under the bracket information.

  • Decide if you agree with Microsoft's Terms of Use. These templates are provided for free; however, certain liability restrictions apply. Read the terms. If you are comfortable, click the "Accept" button.

  • The template will begin to download.

  • Open the template. Double-click the downloaded file and Microsoft Excel will automatically launch to load the bracket. You can now complete the bracket and make it your own. Any customization is available to you as with any other Excel document.

Tips & Warnings

  • Microsoft will scan your computer to verify that the Excel software is properly installed before allowing you to continue with the download. In some cases, the site will indicate the software is not installed, despite the contrary. This is usually due to a web browser not reporting this information correctly. You may need to proceed with the download again using Internet Explorer to ensure proper recognition of your software. The process may still provide a hiccup if your computer has not been updated with recent Active X controls. Remedy this problem by following the subsequent onscreen instructions on the Microsoft error page which will note this configuration issue.
