How to Train Your Yorkie Not to Bark
Yorkshire terriers were originally bred in England to catch the rats and mice that infested mines and clothing mills. These toy dogs today are bred to be loving companions. Yorkies are small in stature but can have a big voice. They can be extremely protective of their home and family, which could lead them to bark at strangers who they see as a threat. It is important to train your Yorkshire terrier to not bark unnecessarily.
Instructions
-
Speak Command
-
1
Place a treat in front of the dog and allow him or her to smell it. Wait until the dog barks and give him or her the treat.
-
2
Take out another treat and when the dog barks for it, give him or her the treat while uttering the command "speak."
-
-
3
Repeat saying the command, giving a treat until the dog barks when he or she hears the word "speak," This will let your dog understand that barking can be used as a form of communication.
Quiet Command
-
4
Show your dog a treat and do not let him or her eat it until any barking ceases. Allow the dog to eat the treat when he or she is quiet.
-
5
Place another treat in front of the dog and when he or she is once again quiet, utter the command "quiet."
-
6
Repeat giving the dog a treat when he or she responds to the word "quiet." This will teach your dog that they must be quiet when the command is uttered.
Other Techniques
-
7
Give your Yorkshire terrier a distraction such as a small chew toy when he or she begins to bark. The toy should be a familiar one so the dog is not startled at it and begins to bark.
-
8
Place the Yorkie in another room if he or she begins to bark at a stranger who enters the home. This will teach him or her that barking unnecessarily will result in being separated from her family.
-
9
Offer the Yorkshire terrier a treat and verbal praise when he or she does not bark at unfamiliar noises, other dogs or any other possible stimuli.
