How to Retrieve Instant Messages on a BlackBerry
Owning a BlackBerry phone means that you have the ability to communicate with others through several ways in one device. Based on what is more convenient for the person you are in communication with, you can phone, text message or email them. Your BlackBerry can also send and receive instant messages for those more comfortable using chat clients. It comes with several instant message applications already installed, including AOL Instant Messenger, Google Talk and its own BlackBerry Messenger.

1
Turn on your BlackBerry phone and navigate to your instant messenger client. Press the menu button from the main screen. In the application page, scroll until you see the instant messenger application you want to use. (Depending on the version of your operating system, you may have a folder on your applications page that holds all your instant messenger applications in one place.)

2
Click on the icon to open it. If this is your first time using this application, read the terms and conditions page. Click "OK" or "Continue" to accept the terms so you can use the instant messenger application.

3
Enter your user name and password on the sign-in screen. Click "Enter" or "OK." It may take a few minutes to connect to the server to retrieve your contacts.
-
4
Retrieve instant messages each time you receive them by opening the instant messenger application and reading them. Each instant message will also appear in your messages folder, along with your text, picture and email messages. Compose new messages and reply to received messages in this folder instead of going back to the instant messenger application.

Tips & Warnings
It is possible to run more than one instant messenger application at a time. You might consider changing the message alerts for each instant messenger application so that you can identify them by sound only.
You can leave an instant messenger application running in the background instead of opening it each time you want to read messages. However, it will also cause your BlackBerry phone battery to drain more quickly than if you closed the instant messenger application until you needed it. If battery life is important to you, consider exiting the instant messenger application when you are not actively using it.
