How to Find Grants for PTO or PTA

School funding comes from a variety of sources, including the federal, state and local government. In recent years, many public schools suffer from a lack of funding, which affects students, teachers and the quality of education and programs. Finding a grant for your parent teacher organization or parent teacher association can often contribute to the success of your programs and the school. Parent groups can apply for grants, but knowing what steps to take is a crucial part of the funding process.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Foundation Center website. The Foundation Center has a searchable grant database that includes foundation grants and corporate grant opportunities. Large corporations, such as Lowe's Charitable and Educational Fund, provide grants specifically for parent groups. When searching through such grant databases, you may search under PTO, PTA, education, schoolbooks, teacher support, elementary or secondary school, and similar terminology.

    • 2

Register at the Grants.gov website, which offers an opportunity for educational institutions or other organizations to find and apply for grants from federal agencies, including the United States Department of Education. In order to apply for federal grants, you need to request an identification number, which may take up to 4 weeks. Once you receive your identification number, you may apply for grants.

    • 3

Review the Department of Education website for your state and request information from the Office of Grants Management. Grant opportunities provide you with an opportunity to apply for entitlement and discretionary grant opportunities for specific projects or needs.

    • 4

Request support from foundations within your community who are interested in education and programs in schools. Your area chamber of commerce may prove a beneficial resource in identifying companies and grants for schools in your area.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure that you check a funder's areas of interests to determine if it supports education and programs for schools. This may help you avoid wasting your time by submitting a grant request that will not be funded.

  • Some foundations only provide funding for 501c3 organizations. Make sure that you are eligible before you submit a grant proposal.
