Instructions

  1. Clay Cabochons

    • 1

Get some oven bake clay at a craft store and mold it into the shape that you want. Make a simple shape like a heart, an oval or a circle with a flat back. With practice you will be able to make shapes that are more complex, such as an animal or object shapes. Make your clay cabochon on a cookie sheet.

    • 2

Follow the directions that came with your package of clay to find out how long it will need to bake in the oven. Preheat your oven to the temperature specified for your clay. The time is usually determined by the thickness of the item you are going to harden, so measure the thickness of your cabochon by holding it next to the ruler. Place the cookie sheet with your cabochon on it on a middle rack in your oven and set a timer for the allotted amount of time.

    • 3

Put on an oven mitt and remove the cookie sheet from the oven. Wait for one hour to let the cabochon cool down. Use acrylic paints to paint designs on the cabochon. Wait for the paint to dry completely and cover the front and back of the cabochon with a hard clear glaze such as diamond glaze.

    Resin Cabochons

    • 4

Purchase a clear polyester resin casting kit from a craft store or from an online store. Pick up some plastic resin molds in the shapes that you want. You can use plastic (resin doesn't stick to plastic or silicone) molds with small shapes in them such as the ones you would use to make small soaps. You will also need resin dye to give your cabochons the color that you want and glitter to add some sparkle.

    • 5

Follow the directions that came with your resin casting kit on mixing the resin and the hardener together. Add a few drops of resin dye for color and sprinkle in the amount of glitter that you want. Mix the ingredients together with wooden stir sticks or a spoon and work quickly. You have about 40 minutes before the resin is too hard to work with.

    • 6

Pour the liquid resin into the resin mold shape. Wait 72 hours for the resin to harden completely before you remove it from the mold. Use E6000 glue to attach the back of your cabochon to a plain accessory to wear it as a hair clip, a ring or a necklace. The E6000 glue will stick to many different surfaces.
