How to Erase Writing in Photoshop

Nearly any portion of an Adobe Photoshop document can be erased. The ease with which you do it depends on if the scene in the image is "busy" or complex. If it is a straight black and white portrait, with the name of the photo studio in the corner, that will not take long. If the writing is over a detailed part of the image, it will take longer.

Instructions

    • 1

Size the image to what the finished photo will be used for, such as a print or the Web. If it is for print, size it to 300 pixels per inch (ppi). If it's for the Web, make it 72 ppi. Go to the "Image" tab, select "Image Size" and enter the number in the "Resolution" box. Save it as a copy through the "File" tab and "Save As." You may need the original image intact, so work on the copy.

    • 2

Select the "Eraser" tool from the side toolbar. If you're working on a basic black and white image, set the color---black or white---in the "Foreground Color" box at the bottom of the side toolbar. Then use the "eraser" over the writing and you are done. If the writing is in a detailed portion of the photo, use the "Clone Stamp Tool," also found in the side Toolbar.

    • 3

Set up the "Clone Stamp Tool" through the Option key (Mac) or Alt key (Windows). While holding the key, sample the area near the writing that you want to cover by clicking the mouse. The cloned area will remain at that distance from your "Clone Stamp Tool," so it is important to keep track of where you are. For example, if the writing goes over both sky and trees, you will want to clone the sky for the sky part and the trees for that part.

Move the writing using the "Clone Stamp Tool." Every time you click the mouse, the sample area will appear over the destination area. If you go too far, go to "Edit" and then "Step Backward." You can do this multiple times if you need to.

Tips & Warnings

  • The actual erasing is done with a brush tool. Change the brush size by going to the top toolbar and selecting a preset or using the slider. You may need several different brush sizes as you work. You can change them at any time. Remember to resample the area to be cloned near the area to be covered often to avoid cloning the wrong area as you change brush sizes.
