How to Import KML to Google Maps

Google Earth allows you to view information laid on top of a map of a particular area, such as census information, marketing information and pictures. The type of file used to view this kind of information in Google Earth is called a KML file. If want to view a KML file on a computer that doesn't have Google Earth installed, Google Maps can also process and view KML files. All you need is an Internet connection.

Things You'll Need

  • Internet connection

Importing KML from a Web Site

  • Open one of your Google Maps.

  • Click the "Edit" button on the left side of the screen.

  • Click the "Import" link. A pop-up box will appear in which you will identify the location of the KML file.

  • Paste the URL of the KML file.

  • Click "Upload from URL." Your KML file will be uploaded to your map.

  • Click "Done" on the left side of the screen to save your map.

Importing KML from a File

  • Open one of your Google Maps.

  • Click the "Edit" button on the left side of the screen.

  • Click the "Import" link. A pop-up box will appear in which you will identify the location of the KML file.

  • Click "Browse."

  • Select the KML or KMZ file you wish to upload.

  • Click "Upload from File." Your KML file will be uploaded to your map.

  • Click "Done" on the left side of the screen to save your map.
