How to Choose a Photo Editor Program to Open Automatically

Find a photo-editor program online (many are free to download and use) or purchase one from a store as digital imaging software (such as Adobe Photoshop). Windows uses the default Windows Photo Gallery picture viewer to open photographs. Select your photo editor of choice as the program to open up photographs and .jpg images. Changing the settings will automatically open the photo editor every time you double click on an image or photograph.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the photo (in JPEG format, so the file will have a .jpg extension) you wish to open. Click on the "Start" icon and choose the "My Pictures" or "My Documents" folder.

    • 2

      Right-click on the photo icon.

    • 3

Click on "Open With" and select the "Choose Program" if you are using Windows XP. Click on "Open With" and select the "Choose Default Program" option in Windows Vista.

    • 4

Click on the photo editor program of your choice, such as Adobe Photoshop or Picasa.

    • 5

Place a check mark next to "Always use the selected program to open this type of file."

    • 6

Click on "OK" to confirm your changes. The photo editor you chose should load immediately and open the photo.
