How to Fasten Necklace Clasps
The strongest and most secure fastenings and clasps must be used for necklaces so that you won't lose your precious jewelry. The mechanisms used for these clasps are usually very small, so you may need to look closely in a mirror to see what you are doing. After a while of putting your necklace on and taking it off you will be able to fasten and unfasten your clasp without looking. The most common clasps used to fasten necklaces are the lobster claw and the spring ring clasp. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Open a lobster claw clasp by pulling back the lever that sticks out of the clasp. Lobster claw claps function like miniature caribiners and are usually in a teardrop or oblong shape. On one side of the clasp is a small lever, which creates an opening on the other with the use of an internal spring mechanism. The opening is a small piece of metal that will open inward, much like the way a caribiner would open.To fasten this clasp, slip the other end of the clasp (a simple jump ring) through the opening and release the lever to close the opening. The lobster claw clasp is popular in the making of necklaces because it is one of the most secure. Just like you would trust your life on the edge of a cliff with a securely anchored caribiner, you can trust that your necklace is fastened securely around your neck.

Use a spring ring clasp by pulling back the small lever. Spring ring clasps are always in a ring shape and are hollow inside to house the tiny spring. The opening of the clasp is a piece of metal that is a little thinner than the rest of it. When you pull down on the lever of this clasp, the thinner piece is drawn inside of the hollow ring, which allows you connect it to the other end of the clasp. The opposite end of the necklace will have either a jump ring or a small, flat piece of metal with a hole in it. Fastening this clasp is a little more difficult because the opening is so small. Look in a mirror so you can see what you are doing if you're having trouble fastening a spring ring clasp.

Get a necklace that has a "hidden clasp" if you don't want a piece of metal in the back, possibly taking the focus away from the gems and beads. A hidden clasp will hold your necklace together securely while remaining, for the most part, undetected. The outside of the hidden clasp takes on the basic shape of the necklace. For example, if your necklace has a box-like design with square gems, the hidden clasp will be in a square shape. Fasten one of these clasps by inserting the pronged end of the clasp into the hollow end until you hear a click.
