1
Hang colored lights around the tree. Colorful lights will add to the fairy tale touches you will be adding later. Start at the bottom, then wind the lights from the base of the branch to the outer end. This process will make each branch seem to come alive. It's a tedious procedure but well worth it.

2
Create contrast with white garland. Use white beads to stand out against the black backdrop of the tree. Drape them in an uneven pattern so they flow up and over branches, much the same way snow would settle on a pine tree.

Hang ornaments that are reminiscent of your favorite childhood Christmases. Radio Flyer wagon ornaments, fire trucks and toy drums will add a touch of sentimentality. Dr. Seuss ornaments are always a hit and will work well against the black because the characters are colorful and vibrant. The Cat in the Hat, the Grinch and that poor little reindeer dog offer the perfect array of whimsy. And no childlike decor would be complete without a plethora of sweet candy canes hung around the tree.

Fashion beautiful ornaments that will carry your own special signature. Cut 6-inch strips of ribbon in several colors. Fill clear glass balls with these pieces, then replace the metal cap. Instead of using traditional hangers, use another piece of ribbon to hang the balls from the branches. Use a glitter pen or glitter glue to write single word phrases on solid-color ornaments. Purple, green and red balls work well. The single word phrases can include "joy," "hope," "wish" and the names of people you love. Hot glue white feathers around the top opening before replacing the metal cap.
