How to Mount a Poster on Poster Board

Creating posters is a standard assignment in many class and work projects. Part of making a successful poster is ensuring that it's supported, which means mounting it. Mounting a poster on poster board makes the poster look better and the presentation seem more professional. While mounting a poster does present its share of challenges, it's a task that most people find they can do with a little bit of preparation and know-how.

Instructions

  1. Mounting a Poster on Poster Board

    • 1

Make or print out the poster you'd like to mount.

    • 2

Measure the poster so that it fits the poster board.

    • 3

Mark the board to the specifications of the poster. If the poster is sturdy enough, you can use it to mark the board so that the poster fits the board. If not, use the ruler. You'll want to decide if you want the poster to go all the way to the edges of the poster board or if you want to create a bit of a border. If you need any kind of captions for your work, you'll want to leave a bit of a border.

    • 4

Cut your poster board so that it fits your poster. Hold the poster next to the cut board, just to make sure that it's the right size. If it's not, trim the edges as needed.

    • 5

Lay the poster on top of the poster board, face up. It's a good idea to work on a large work surface like a kitchen table when doing this part.

    • 6

Flip the poster over as if the short end of the poster and the short end of the poster board were hinged. If you've done this correctly, the poster will be laying face down on the table, and one of its short ends will be touching one of the short ends of the board.

    • 7

Take the cap off the rubber cement and gently apply a line of rubber cement to the short end of the poster board (on the side where the poster and the poster board are touching). This should only be a line.

    • 8

Flip the poster back over, being careful to keep the two ends touching---provided that you aren't trying to create a border---and line the edge of the back side of the poster up with the the edge of the poster board.

    • 9

Lay the poster gently on the side that has been rubber cemented. The poster should now be right-side up and should be laying on top of the poster board.

    • 10

Straighten the edges of the poster so that it lines up with the edges of the poster board. You'll have a couple of seconds before the rubber cement dries. Once it does dry, the two "short ends" should now be glued together.

    • 11

Rubber cement the other edges, making sure to smooth out any wrinkles along the way. You'll repeat this process until all four sides of the poster have been glued down to the poster board.
