How to Hang Exterior Vinyl Shutters

Exterior vinyl shutters are easy to hang, maintenance free, and more durable than wooden shutters. Vinyl shutters are available at any home improvement store in many styles and colors. These shutters typically come with a special fastener; but for the proper look, shutters should be mounted with exterior shutter hinges. This method is better than the direct mounting method because it not only adds more dimension, but it also prevents water from becoming trapped behind the shutter and producing mold.

Things You'll Need

• Tape measure
• 1/4" drill bit
• Drill
• Vinyl shutters
• Exterior shutter hinges
• Screws

Instructions

1. Measure the inside of the window frames prior to purchasing vinyl shutters to ensure proper sizing and scale.

2. Mount the exterior shutter hinges onto the side of the vinyl shutter approximately 1 inch from each end with screws.

3. Hold the shutter into the desired position, lining up with the top and bottom of the window sill. Use the holes in the shutter hinges to mark the holes that need to be drilled into the window frame.

4. Drill the holes into the window frame where the shutter will be mounted.

5. Mount the vinyl shutter into place by screwing it in through both sets of hinges.

6. Repeat the steps for the other side of the window.
